While EDI is everyone’s business, the commitment and passion of the EDI Network by Being Woman supported by Thriving Together Northumberland will be instrumental to promoting and delivering aspects of EDI across the county in support of the Equality Act 2010. Through establishing and leading on this network we aim to contribute to fostering good relations in terms of how we act and behave on the ground. It means more than just having a policy. It means talking and listening to each other and ensuring we are able to convey what we may need to help us work as inclusively as possible.
We are looking for active partnership and membership, in many cases members with lived experience, and areas where we all personally have knowledge around certain protected characteristics.
Microaggressions, those subtle, often unintentional comments or behaviours can have a lasting impact on confidence, wellbeing, and belonging. That is why we have developed the Recognising Microaggressions and Creating Safe Spaces Toolkit, a practical guide for organisations, networks, and individuals.
The toolkit explains what microaggressions are, why they matter, and how they appear in verbal, non-verbal, and environmental forms. It provides real examples, strategies for responding constructively, and activities to help teams build awareness. Most importantly, it highlights how small, everyday actions can contribute to more respectful, supportive, and inclusive environments.
This resource is available to download free of charge and has been developed through our EDI Network with the support of Thriving Together Northumberland. We invite organisations, SMEs, and community groups across the region to use it as a tool for reflection, learning, and action.
